Hermann Schulz was born in 1938 as the son of a German missionary in Tanzania. He grew up in Wendland and Lower Rhine and has lived in Wuppertal since 1960. He worked in the mining industry after working as a bookseller. From 1967 to 2001 he directed the Peter Hammer publishing house. In 1998 his first novel Auf dem Strom was published. Since 2001 he devotes himself entirely to writing.

Nearly 20 books have already been published by him, many of them have been awarded with important prizes. Inspired by his numerous journeys to over 50 countries, they tell of children and adolescents of different cultures and nationalities. Hermann Schulz describes the emotions and thoughts of his young protagonists, who often have to cope with difficult living conditions and challenges. In his pointed dialogues, tragedy and situation comics often lie close together. In this way, Hermann Schulz, with his deeply humane attitude, always succeeds in creating an atmosphere of security and human solidarity.
