Anja Reumschüssel: Über den Dächern von Jerusalem

Schloss Blutenburg / Grade 9 - 12

Über den Dächern von Jerusalem (Above the roofs of Jerusalem)
Carlsen 2023.

It is not easy to fathom the conflict in the Middle East. Who lays claim to which territories and why is the situation so explosive? In her novel, which was published before the events of October 7, 2023, Anja Reumschüssel deals with Israel from its founding through to the modern day. In the year 2023, a young Israeli soldier, Anat, and the young Palestinian boy Karim meet by chance in the West Bank and begin an unusual friendship. In a second narrative, in the year 1947, the 15-year-old Holocaust survivor Tessa arrives in Palestine. In Jerusalem she encounters Mo, whose family has been driven out of the city. In a skilfully employed dramaturgy, the author interweaves historical facts with the individual fates of her protagonists.  In this way she succeeds in illuminating the Arabic and the Israeli positions equally, thus making the roots of the conflict transparent and comprehensible (not only) for adolescent readers. At the same time her novel is a fascinating family and adventure story, accessible, intensive and written with a (seemingly) light touch.
