Kairi Look, Estonia
Kairi Look was born in 1983 and grew up in Tallin, though she views Amsterdam as her second home. She is a translator of literature from Dutch into Estonian and writes books for children, young adults and adults as well as short stories, theatre plays and book reviews for magazines. Kairi Look is among the most well-known children’s book writers in her country. She has a great heart for humour and a fondness for the small absurdities of everyday life.
In her children’s books, Kairi Look hopes to convey optimism, light-heartedness and courage to be oneself. She achieves this through her endearing characters, a stunning imagination, warm-heartedness and a large pinch of playfulness. Consequently, she has been frequently nominated for and won awards in Estonia, most recently the “Hea lasteraamat” (Good Children’s Book). She began her internationally successful book series about Pia Peppermint in 2015 and now the first volume is available in German.
The events with Kairi Look will be moderated by Katja Wiebe, expert for East European literatures at the International Youth Library. They will be accompanied by Thomas Birnstiel as speaker.
